Mala Beads & Bracelets

What are mala beads?

A mala (meaning ‘garland’ in Sankrit) is a string of beads traditionally used to count mantra during meditation or prayer.  In the modern Yoga tradition, they are also used more simply to count the breath in meditation. Outside of meditation, they may be worn as a meaningful piece of jewellery.

Malas are typically made using a combination of natural stones, pearls, seeds and wood.

Originating from the Buddhist tradition, but also used in Hinduism and other ancient traditions, a mala consists of 108 beads plus a ‘guru’ bead. In some cases, a tassel or amulet are also added.

108 is an auspicious number.  In Buddhism, 108 relates to the number of human passions that are believed to impede enlightenment.  In Hinduism, 108 represents the universe and wholeness; with 108 being the distance, in units, between our body and that of the God within us.   With each of the 108 chants of the mantra, we are thought to be brought one unit closer to the God within us.  Hence, one full circuit around the mala brings you to the ‘guru’ bead.

Mala can be imbued with further meaning by creating them with materials believed to possess certain qualities. Many people are drawn to the mystic lore behind certain crystals. A mala may therefore be made, or chosen, for the powers or qualities that its materials are thought to hold. If you are making or choosing your own mala, this is a lovely way to select one with personal meaning to you.  Simply scroll down to explore the various crystals and their qualities.

I adore making malas using crystals and wooden beads.  I find the act of making them to be incredibly creative and relaxing.  They are a beautiful tool for meditation - providing a tactile focus for the mind.  If you would like to create your own, or have one made for you, please see below for further details.

How to use your mala...

You can hold your mala in either hand between your middle finger and thumb. Starting with the bead next to the guru bead, slowly pass one bead at a time through the fingers for each inhalation and exhalation, or mantra. Continue this 108 times until you feel the guru bead between your fingers. You can now choose to stop, having completed one round, or continue for as many more rounds as you wish.

You can also use your mala to guide you through a gratitude practice. For each bead that passes through your fingers, allow yourself to meditate upon a different source of gratitude.
